Interface Design Projects

Good user interface design depends on a deeper understanding of both system user characteristics as well as their assumptions, and the context in which the system is used.  How we perceive and interpret information can be greatly affected by the manner that it is presented. It must work in harmony with the user's mental model of the system; as well as the decisions & actions that they take to support their current task objectives.

The context in which the system is used will greatly affect the assumptions made and interactive actions taken by the user.  A system is not an island, and is best designed to seamlessly fit into the operators current “eco-system” in a predicable & reliable way.

User interface development is often a delicate balance between a larger systems perspective and innovative systems interface capabilities that come with new systems and the existing operators comfort with existing systems characteristics.  We often like what we know, and resist new approaches.  The user interface designer must have a keen appreciation for the users direct experience with the system while knowing who to push for innovation where it directly supports the operational requirements.

Finally the system must be both robust and forgiving for the operator to identify either inappropriate inputs without non-recoverable, or negative outcomes.

Console Interface Design

My interface design projects have ranged from intuitive consumer systems, to highly complex situation awareness and mission planning programs for aircraft or naval systems.  The best user interface is a subtle blend of the control and display options available, the user expectations and the breadth of the functionality required.  I have use of systematic operator workload and systems requirements analysis followed by iterative prototyping and user feedback process to develop more complex systems that address the system objectives.

Mobile Device Interface Design

Interface design for mobile devices presents new graphical and functional norms and expectations.  Limited screen area and the variety, and resolution, of input characteristics on these devices calls for different approaches and interaction modes.
